Hikes designed for little minds, with a fun and educational twist.
Each month we'll explore a different scientific topic that highlights why our foothills, and great Canadian Rocky Mountains, are such a special place. These field trips are curated for families with kids ages 6-10, with an emphasis on learning. Each Little Scientist will be given a fun activity workbook to complete on trail, and at home.
Little Scientist field trips are designed to be attended by children and their parent/caregiver. Participants should be prepared to walk 4-8km, at a child's pace. (Distance varies by hike location and is chosen by the booking party). Children under the age of 6 might find these field trips to be a lot of walking, for their little legs. These hikes are not stroller or wagon friendly. Please come prepared with a suitable baby/child carrier if you think your little one might snuggle with the distance.
Each field trip will include an educational component on being bear aware and the principals of "Leave No Trace", multiple stops for educational moments and a chance to refuel the brain (snacks, we love snacks), a lunch break and plenty of time to ask questions, soak up nature and hopefully enjoy the sunshine.
Field trips are led by a certified interpretive hiking guide.
Want to attend with your homeschool cohort/another family of your choosing, or meet some new friends? No problem. We can accommodate families looking for a private field trip, or small groups of multiple families. Kids who travel with other kids, tend to be able to walk much further, so we definitely encourage multi-family groups.

While these field trips are "half day" hikes for the typical adult, we suggest you plan to be out the entire "school day", with the required drive to/from the trailhead. We will be moving at a slower place to accommodate little legs. At no time will anyone be left behind; and due to this there is always the possibility that we won't reach the day's "objective".

"I recently did the Jumpingpound Summit hike with Sonja guiding us. Our family does not do a lot of hiking but we want to learn more spots to go that are family friendly. Sonja planned this hike for us, gave me details of what to bring, and guided us on the trail. It was a lot of fun! Sonja had a lot of interesting information to share, and my kids have been talking about trees and mushrooms ever since. It was a great day and I would highly recommend her services.
